Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a brain-based disorder characterized by difficulties in paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Children with ADHD may have difficulty maintaining focus at school, which often leads to poor school performance. Hyperactive and impulsive behaviors may cause a struggle in creating friendships and with staying out of trouble at school. Adults may also be plagued with symptoms of ADHD. Adult ADHD can wreak havoc on one’s ability to engage in appropriate work behaviors, and it can also create difficulties in relationships.

Treatment for Childhood ADHD:
Our focus at Healthy Synergy is to understand how ADHD impacts your child’s ability to function in school, at home, and with friends. With this understanding the therapist can work with you to develop a behavioral plan that specifically addresses the major areas of impact. For example, if your child is highly impulsive, the therapist will engage the child in activities that encourage the development of impulse control skills. Treatment will also focus on supporting you, the parent, in developing some ways to manage difficult ADHD behaviors. Ultimately, the goal is for your child to feel more confident in their ability to focus and control their behaviors and for them to experience positive relationships.Treatment for Adult ADHD:
Treating your adult ADHD starts with obtaining a full understanding of how it impacts your work, home, and social life. With adult ADHD it is common to feel overwhelmed with organizing yourself to be productive. It can also be difficult to control one’s impulses and hard to maintain consistent and stable relationships. Your therapist can help you develop some habits to improve your ability to organize your life, boost your productivity, and to feel more stable and consistent in your relationships with others. For additional information about ADHD go to:

Feeling nervous and worried are common emotions when facing life challenges. In small doses, anxiety can help us focus and perform better. However, when worries and fears interfere with our ability to function, anxiety may be too high. For instance, if you find yourself worrying about everything or avoiding people, places, or things because of how anxious you feel, it may be time to get help.
Therapy for anxiety helps reduce excessive worry and increases your comfort in being your self and doing the things you want to do. At Healthy Synergy we integrate cognitive-behavioral, dialectical-behavior, and psychodynamic approaches to tailor a treatment that reduces your anxiety.

A child who is highly disruptive or disobedient can be very frustrating. Frustration occurs because children generally want to be able to control their behaviors and parents want nothing more than for their children to be happy and healthy. Learning self-discipline and self-control can be very challenging. If you and your child struggle with learning how to control their behaviors, it may be time to seek help.
Through a variety of behavioral approaches we work with children and families to encourage children to gain control. Parents are encouraged to find new ways to promote their child’s success and children gain awareness about how their behaviors can create their own success. Through this process children also develop a more positive view of themselves.

Food is very powerful! It is the nutritional fuel that supports our bodies and it can also fuel how we feel. Often, we find ourselves eating for reasons other than hunger. This may occur when we feel bored or lonely, when we feel stressed or anxious, or when we just have a strong need for comfort. Sometimes we do not realize that we are using food in an attempt to cope with these feelings. We confuse our emotional hunger for true hunger. While food may temporarily improve how we feel, it is usually not the right fix for our emotions. Through therapy we can support you in identifying the emotions that trigger eating and find healthier and more satisfying ways to cope with them.

Marriage, divorce, starting a new job, and loss of a significant loved one are just a few of the major life events that can cause us to feel overwhelmed. Even when the event is positive, the adjustment can create mixed emotions that leave us conflicted. For example, you may be excited about the challenge of starting a new career, but also terrified about the uncertainty of the change. When feelings become intense we can become almost paralyzed in our ability to make decisions or move forward.
At Healthy Synergy we support you through difficult life transitions. We listen and help you sort through the many complex feelings you have, and we facilitate your ability to work through the challenges you are facing whether that be making important decisions, adjusting to a new situation, or grieving over a loss.

Sometimes the most negative relationship we have is with ourself. We may have negative thoughts about who we are and what we can do. This negative view can make it almost impossible to feel good about our interactions with others and can create real stumbling blocks in our ability to achieve our goals. If your view of yourself is very negative, or if you just feel uncertain about who you are or how to relate to others, it may be time to get help.
At Healthy Synergy we can help you develop a more positive and realistic view of yourself. We may help you understand how your view of yourself developed, how it currently impacts your life, and how to develop a more positive view. Doing so may involve exploring more deeply who you are, what your values are, and what you want in life. Being more self-aware can make you feel more stable and confident in your relationships with others.

For many, drinking alcohol and/or using drugs has become a primary part of social activities. The overuse of prescribed narcotics for pain has also become highly prevalent in our society. While initial use of these substances may pose no concerns, ongoing and increased use can become a problem. You may not realize that your use of substances has become a problem until it has a negative impact on your ability to work, your relationships, or how you feel. When these difficulties arise it is time to seek help.
At Healthy Synergy we work with you to assess and understand how your use of substances is impacting you and your family. Sometimes learning different coping strategies can alleviate the need to use substances and is sufficient. When a higher level of dependency is assessed, recommendations for additional treatment may also be made.
