Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a brain-based disorder characterized by difficulties in paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Children with ADHD may have difficulty maintaining focus at school, which often leads to poor school performance. Hyperactive and impulsive behaviors may cause a struggle in creating friendships and with staying out of trouble at school. Adults may also be plagued with symptoms of ADHD. Adult ADHD can wreak havoc on one’s ability to engage in appropriate work behaviors, and it can also create difficulties in relationships.
Treatment for Childhood ADHD:
Our focus at Healthy Synergy is to understand how ADHD impacts your child’s ability to function in school, at home, and with friends. With this understanding the therapist can work with you to develop a behavioral plan that specifically addresses the major areas of impact. For example, if your child is highly impulsive, the therapist will engage the child in activities that encourage the development of impulse control skills. Treatment will also focus on supporting you, the parent, in developing some ways to manage difficult ADHD behaviors. Ultimately, the goal is for your child to feel more confident in their ability to focus and control their behaviors and for them to experience positive relationships.
Treatment for Adult ADHD:
Treating your adult ADHD starts with obtaining a full understanding of how it impacts your work, home, and social life. With adult ADHD it is common to feel overwhelmed with organizing yourself to be productive. It can also be difficult to control one’s impulses and hard to maintain consistent and stable relationships. Your therapist can help you develop some habits to improve your ability to organize your life, boost your productivity, and to feel more stable and consistent in your relationships with others.
